Space Saving and Aesthetics
There are a variety of counter-top indoor gardens on the market today; however, when we set out to design the VeggieWall we recognized many people do not have extra counter space. Additionally, many of these systems do not grow a lot of plants for their price. They are perfect if you just want a few fresh herbs; however, we were inspired by living walls: tapestries of beautiful (non-edible) plants, and we wanted people to have the flexibility to grow as much as they need. We made a wall-mounted system to reflect the beauty of having living plants as art, bringing nature indoors, while not taking up valuable living space, whether that be your counter-top or floor. With more and more people moving to urban areas, they have less space inside, and out.
This is what truly makes the VeggieWall New and Innovative and why we received funding from the National Research Council of Canada. While other indoor gardens utilize pre-existing horizontal hydroponic systems, we designed the Nutrient Cascade Technology, a new hydroponic system that is vertical. The Nutrient Cascade Technology is patent pending and allowed us to achieve the aesthetics, space savings, vertical, and modular features of the VeggieWall, and what makes it a world's first.
Next to space saving and aesthetics we made the VeggieWall completely modular. Currently for homes we sell two sizes, but in reality the VeggieWall can be stacked as high and as wide as you want. We will have that option available for you to add to your current VeggieWalls in the future.
Lastly we want to empower people to grow food, we don't want to control it. Although, if we were all about business and making money, we would create a "seed cartridge" system like most of our competitors. Think of it like buying ink cartridges, in this case you can't grow food unless you buy their seed cartridge system. We don't want to do that, so you can use our very affordable organic and heirloom seeds packages especially picked for use in the VeggieWall, our you can use your own seeds.
Because hydroponic systems do not use traditional soil it is also very important to know what your plants are growing in.
We choose coconut coir for two reasons:
1. It is awesome. It is biodegradable and works better than peat, a long-time used material by gardeners. The problem with peat is that it is one of the planet's best carbon sinks, so we shouldn't be mining it, which brings us to,
2. Coconut Coir is a waste product left over from coconut harvest. Saving it from being thrown out, it is becoming a very popular material in indoor and outdoor gardens. When your plant is completely harvested you can compost the coconut seed plug.

The second material we use is Recycled Glass.
This allows the ideal conditions around your plants to develop healthy roots and absorb organic nutrients. The recycled glass is basically on its way to transforming back into sand. It is totally natural, safe, and it can be re-used in your VeggieWall multiple times. It is also so light weight that it floats!
